LA Promise Zone GEAR UP Grant
Life of the Grant: September 25, 2019 - September 24, 2024
Funding: $1,612,000 per grant year (contingent upon appropriations by U.S. Congress)
The Goal: In partnership with 11 partner high schools in the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood, the Mission of the GEAR UP Partnership is to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education by increasing academic performance and preparation, increasing high school graduation rate and increasing student and family awareness around college.
Federal Expectations: The U.S. Department of Education expects that grantees work with partner schools to improve the academic performance and preparation for students while empowering parents to support their students’ goals. Currently serving 10th and 11th graders in the program components below:

School Climate Transformation Grant

Funding: $750,000 per grant year (contingent upon appropriations by U.S. Congress)
The Goal: To help Vaughn NCLC schools set processes, systems, and structures to improve positive reinforcement practices and systems of supports to cultivate a positive school climate and achieve academic success.
Federal Expectations: The U.S. Department of Education expects that grantees work towards improving school climate conditions in the specific areas shown below:
- Support school sites to implement a multi-tiered system of support to fidelity by providing technical assistance and learning opportunities to school staff;
- Show improvement in the school climate/culture perception via the administration of the School Climate Survey;
- Implement Opioid abuse prevention and mitigation strategies;
- Decrease the number of suspensions and expulsions related to the possession or use of alcohol and/or other drugs.
Program Achievements (through June 2021)
- 2,664+ hours of learning opportunities and technical assistance engagement
- 78% overall School Climate satisfaction
- 242 engaged in learning opportunities and technical assistance
- All Vaughn sites have active PBIS Tier 1 teams
- Social Emotional Learning survey conducted at all sites
- Adopted Educators Handbook as student behavior tracking platform
- 84 technical assistance and learning opportunities offered
- 190 staff members participated in at least 5 hours of learning opportunities and/or technical assistance
- 63 staff members participated in at least 10 hours of learning opportunities and/or technical assistance
- 34 staff members participated in at least 20 hours of learning opportunities and/or technical assistance
- 19 staff members participated in at least 30 hours of learning opportunities and/or technical assistance

What we do:
The After School Expanded Learning Opportunities Program at Vaughn NCLC provides students with academic support, enrichment, and recreational activities. Our programs encourage intellectual discovery and ignite curiosity through social and emotional learning and hands-on project-based activities. Our programs are FREE of charge and available to students in TK-12 grade. All students in the program also receive a nutritious daily snack.
Mission:
Provide maximum learning opportunities to students so they can be successful academically, physically, and socially.
Goals:
Our goal is to support student's success in school through activities during expanded learning hours, intersession, summer, and winter breaks
Community Partnership:
We recognize the importance of working together with the community to provide Vaughn NCLC scholars with the best support network and learning environment. That is why we have partnered with community-based organizations to provide after-school services and enrichment opportunities.
